Creation of the «Swiss Safari Rally Team» (SSRT)

The «Swiss Safari Rally Team» was founded in 1982 by a group of participants of the Paris Dakar Rally. This group of adventure-loving Swiss men and women was composed of a well-known group of drivers (of 4x4s, trucks and all-purpose motor bikes), who had completed the Paris-Dakar in 1981 with some success. Further to this event, which was covered by abundant press reports, the requests to participate in the rally became more and more numerous.

Objectives:

The requests becoming more and more complex, it was decided that a club should be founded. Since its creation, the objectives have been as follows :

bulletTo assist the interested parties during their participation at rallies and to put the existing experience at their disposition.
bulletTo convene the interested parties to exchange information and to organise conferences on the subject.

Over the years the centres of interest have become diversified, for example due to the growing popularity of tourism on the African continent. It is not surprising that a large number of our 250 club members often travel to the Sahara or other such destinations. The conferences that we propose (films, slide-shows) testify the desire to travel as well as the craving for adventure of our members. A number of them participate in international rallies and the club organises several rallies each year.

Motor bikers and 4x4 drivers participate actively in club-life, together and without friction – and this is exceptional enough to be mentioned! Motor bikes and 4x4s leave together for the desert and benefit mutually from each other’s know-how.

Activities:

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at 8.00 p.m. The club restaurant is the «Roessli» in Oensingen.

In addition to the viewing of films and slide-shows, personalities such as Heinz Kinigadner, Jordi Arcarons, Sven Quandt, Dany Wirz or Chris Attiger are invited to give conferences. Entrance is free and non-members are cordially invited.

A monthly club magazine is edited comprising contributions about various events and club life in general as well as an invitation to the monthly meeting. Dates for all important events of the rally and off-road scenes are published.

Club rallies for motor bikes and also a number for 4x4s are organised in Switzerland, adjacent countries and even in the North African continent.

Rallies for beginners are organised offering an initiation to this sport for our members and any other interested parties. In addition, our more experienced members offer courses in navigation, driving techniques and desert conduct. Training sessions are organised regularly with the cooperation of qualified organisations. Participants learn to fully control their bike or 4x4 in difficult situations, a necessity to ensure successful participation at competitions.

Annual fees:

Annual fees amount to CHF 70.—(around  Euros 40.--).

Monthly meetings:

Meetings are held at the restaurant “Roessli” in Oensingen and convene at 8.00 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month. Entrance is free and all interested parties are cordially invited
